A Western New York man who discovered himself in a pickle concocted an elaborate and not-so-great method to get out of it. Police say Robert Brandel faked his personal abduction to keep away from paying out the winners of a Tremendous Bowl pool.
Police discovered [Brandel], aroudn 2:40 p.m. on Feb. 27 inside his blue Ford F-150 truck on the 3900 block of Lockport-Olcott Street in Newfane.
He was within the backseat with a rope tied round his neck, the opposite finish tied to the pinnacle relaxation. Duct tape was wrapped round his arms and ankles. He then spun a weird story for troopers, who started an abduction and theft investigation.
Brandel advised police that he picked up two males in his truck on Feb. 25 who had positioned bets on a Tremendous Bowl pool. The lads brandished a pistol and stole $16,000 in money he had gained from the payout of the pool, Brandel advised troopers.
A fast investigation revealed that the entire story was made up, in accordance with authorities, who allege Brandel had organized the pool himself, entered a number of pretend names in hopes of pocketing the cash, and panicking when he needed to pay out the cash.
Among the many fees he confronted is felony scheme to defraud.
